Job Mind-Set

The ‘Job Mind-Set’ describes the majority of employees in the workplace. People with this mind-set view work and their careers primarily as a necessary trade of time and skill for the money they need to make a living or fund a chosen life style. Although this approach to work, found in highly skilled as well as lower skilled people, does provide valuable service to customers and a company, personal impact is never a possibility. The person with a ‘Job Mind-Set’ usually avoids the responsibility and effort required to create the unique difference that will define their impact. They also avoid accepting the consequences for lack of achievement.

The general lack of a higher purpose (other than making a living or funding a certain life style), together with an unwillingness to be stretched uncomfortably to achieve more, makes it highly unlikely that employees in this category will truly identify in any personal way with a company’s customers and with its vision and mission.

People with a job mind-set generally see work as a ‘right’ and not an opportunity that must be earned. They will be inclined to do only what is required of them (even though they do a good job) without ever discovering what they might be capable of. Mediocrity is often their standard although they will seldom realise it.
